BOOK GIFT TO SOGERI NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

The president of the Australia Papua New Guinea Business Council, Mr Ian Clarke (Chairman, Gadens Lawyers), today made a presentation to the Principal of Sogeri National High School, Ms Lillian Ahai, of a gift of books for which the Council had co-ordinated funding through the Australian Agency of International Development (AusAID) to the value of approximately K30,000.

"The Council is delighted to assist the students and staff of Sogeri High School in rebuilding their library destroyed by fire several years ago" Mr Clarke said.

Mr Clarke acknowledged the support of AusAID in providing funding for the book purchase.

"AusAID's funding support was crucial to us being able to complete this project."

Mr Clarke said the project was initiated within the Council by Mr Roger Promnitz, then General Manager for the Pacific of Origin Energy Limited, who had visited the school in 2003 and identified the need for assistance with rebuilding library stocks. Mr Promnitz had brought a proposal to the Council's board which had agreed to undertake the project.

"A number of other members have assisted in bringing the project to completion: ANZ Banking Group has been providing assistance to the school library with computers, Qantas provided assistance with freighting the books from Australia, and AFL Freight Management provided logistic assistance in Australia", Mr Clarke said.

"I am grateful to the support of those members in making this donation possible."

Mr Clarke was accompanied at the presentation by representatives of the Council's Papua New Guinea Branch, the Business Council of Papua New Guinea and AusAID.
